Troubles :
The airline company’s BI pattern was a self-service BI model. This was implemented through power users who populated Power BI reports using:
- CSV extractions uploaded to SharePoint sites
- unauthorized SQL queries directly against the production databases of the information system’s applications.
The reports were unmaintainable, relying on data sources that were not “certified by the IT department.” As a result, every figure was routinely challenged.
Owners :
The Transformation Director was leading the project to transition from a Self-BI pattern to a Managed Self-BI pattern. This request originated from the Executive Committee (COMEX), which complained about not being able to generate reliable reports, such as the number of delayed flights.
Success Factors :
- That Power BI reports be directly connected to the views in the data warehouse.
- That users engage with the Data & Integration department to initiate a project aimed at populating the data warehouse with sources from the source applications.
Constraints :
Due to resource constraints allocated to the projects, we were unable to model the data from the main applications of the information system.
The approach adopted was to start from the ‘business objects’ most frequently represented in Power BI reports and adapt the data model to the actual usage patterns of the users
Actors:
- Transformation Director,
- A team of 3 data engineers,
- The power users from the “Crew Operations”, “Flight Schedule”, and “Maintenance” departments
